Max Verstappen secured pole position for the Australian Grand Prix, setting a blistering lap of 1m15.915s on his final run in Q3.

The Red Bull driver beat Ferrari's Carlos Sainz to the top spot, denying the Italian team a chance at pole.

Sainz, who had been fastest in both Q1 and Q2, looked set to challenge for pole on his return to F1 after missing the Saudi Arabian round due to appendicitis.

However, Verstappen's final lap in Q3 proved unbeatable, with the Dutchman finding a quarter-second advantage over Sainz.

Sergio Perez secured third place for Red Bull, narrowly edging out McLaren's Lando Norris by less than half a tenth of a second.

However, Perez received a three-place grid penalty after qualifying for impeding Nico Hulkenberg.

Norris demonstrated his dominance over teammate Oscar Piastri, who had been impressive during the sessions at his home race.

Ferrari's Challenges

Charles Leclerc, who had started on the front row in every race this season, saw his streak come to an end.

The Monegasque driver had a slide out of Turn 12 on his final lap, forcing him to abandon his effort and settle for fifth on the grid.

Midfield Battles and Surprises

George Russell was the sole Mercedes representative in Q3, securing seventh place.

Lance Stroll claimed ninth for Aston Martin, despite a snap of oversteer at Turn 10, while teammate Fernando Alonso completed the top 10.

Alonso had aborted his first run in Q3 after skipping across the gravel at Turn 6 and couldn't find pace on his final lap.

Mercedes continues to struggle with balance, as Lewis Hamilton was knocked out in Q2 after failing to sufficiently improve on his final flying lap.

Alex Albon, who controversially took over Logan Sargeant's car for the rest of the weekend after crashing his own in FP1, secured 12th place for Williams.

Q1 Drama

Q1 saw Daniel Ricciardo lose his best lap due to a track limits violation at Turn 5, dropping him to 18th and out of contention.

Esteban Ocon survived a wall-bang at Turn 14 to progress to Q2 but could only manage 15th.

Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly were also eliminated in Q1, with both drivers under investigation - Gasly for crossing the pit exit line too early and Perez for impeding Hulkenberg.

Zhou Guanyu propped up the order after his front wing appeared to shed its elements, leaving him unable to progress from Q1.
