Toto Wolff affirms his long-term commitment to Mercedes
Despite Mercedes’ first winless season since 2011, Wolff believes he still provides vital leadership continuity, affirming his long-term commitment to the team.
Mercedes team principal and CEO Toto Wolff reaffirmed his commitment to remain in leadership roles long-term in an interview with Planet F1.
This steadfast stance comes despite Mercedes ending 2022 winless for the first time since 2011.
When asked whether recent struggles have prompted considerations about stepping down, Wolff insisted, "No, I don’t, because I still think that I can contribute to the team in my area of expertise."
He highlighted his skills at "keeping it together, although I’m very emotional sometimes" as vital continuity during emotional lows.
Though self-reflective about always questioning his performance, Wolff stated,
"Unfortunately, I haven’t found someone who I would say I think that person has more energy, more drive, more skill – all of these factors that I believe are important to be the team principal and CEO."
Intriguingly, he referenced past examples like Frank Williams and Ron Dennis who held onto power too long, vowing "I'm not going anywhere."
Wolff is willing to transition leadership during low periods if it serves the team, stressing his “20 year perspective” as a 33% share owner rather than chasing short-term results.
However, Wolff asserted, "I don’t feel any entitlement" to personally restore championship glory then depart on a high.
He would welcome new structures without daily oversight duty if they optimize operations, comparing his evolving role to active NFL owners like Robert Kraft.
So while the fiercely competitive Wolff surely hopes to oversee many more victories, his primary aim is structuring sustainable excellence by empowering the larger Mercedes machine.
Wolff's commitment and self-awareness continues to provide stability amidst recent adversities.
