Technical Overview

The FIA has revealed the initial images and key details of Formula 1's all-new 2026 car concept.

Slated for final approval on June 28, these regulations aim to usher in a "moderate revolution" for the sport, as described by the FIA's single-seater director, Nikolas Tombazis.

Aerodynamic advancements

Designed to minimize the detrimental effects of dirty air and improve on-track action, the 2026 cars will feature active aerodynamics.

Notable changes include a narrower front wing, the removal of front wheel arches, and the incorporation of in-washing wheel wake control boards in front of the sidepods.

Additionally, a three-element active rear wing with simplified endplates will replace the current lower beam wing.

Compact and agile

In pursuit of increased agility and driver skill, the 2026 cars will be 30kg lighter than their current counterparts, with a reduced wheelbase of 3400mm (from 3600mm) and a narrower width of 1900mm (from 2000mm).

The maximum floor width will also be trimmed by 150mm.

Tyre modifications

While retaining the 18-inch wheel size introduced in 2022, the front tyre width will be reduced by 25mm, and the rear tyres will be 30mm narrower.

However, the FIA aims to minimize any significant loss of grip resulting from these changes.

Aerodynamic efficiency

To further enhance close racing, the new cars will feature a 30% reduction in downforce and a 55% decrease in drag.

This will be achieved through a partially flat floor and a lower-powered diffuser, reducing reliance on ultra-stiff and low ride-height setups.

Safety enhancements

Alongside performance improvements, the 2026 regulations prioritize safety with a two-stage front impact structure, improved side intrusion protection, increased roll hoop loads from 16G to 20G, and brighter rear wing endplate lights.
