OFFICIAL: Adrian Newey joins Aston Martin as F1 Technical Director
Aston Martin secures Adrian Newey as Managing Technical Partner and shareholder, focusing on 2026 car development. Newey cites Aston Martin's state-of-the-art facilities and partnerships as key factors in his decision to join the ambitious F1 team.
Aston Martin has officially secured the services of Adrian Newey, widely regarded as the sport's preeminent designer.
The Silverstone-based team announced on Tuesday that Newey will assume the newly created role of Managing Technical Partner from March 1, 2025, while also becoming a shareholder in the ambitious outfit.
Newey's primary focus at Aston Martin will be overseeing the crucial development of the team's 2026 car, coinciding with Formula 1's introduction of sweeping new technical regulations.
This acquisition represents a major coup for Aston Martin, given the intense speculation surrounding Newey's future following his high-profile departure from Red Bull Racing.
A new challenge
The 65-year-old engineer's decision to join Aston Martin comes as a surprise to many in the paddock.
Ferrari had long been considered the frontrunner to secure Newey's talents, with the designer himself expressing interest in collaborating with Lewis Hamilton, who is set to join the Scuderia in 2025.
However, Aston Martin's ambitious plans and state-of-the-art facilities have proven to be the decisive factor in Newey's choice.
The team's owner, Lawrence Stroll, has invested heavily in a new campus and cutting-edge wind tunnel at Silverstone, creating an environment that Newey found irresistible.
A statement of intent
Newey's arrival at Aston Martin is a clear statement of the team's championship aspirations.
With an already impressive technical lineup including Dan Fallows and recent Ferrari hire Enrico Cardile, the addition of Newey's unparalleled expertise could be the final piece of the puzzle in Aston Martin's quest for Formula 1 supremacy.
"I am thrilled to be joining the Aston Martin Formula 1 team,"
Newey stated.
"I have been hugely inspired and impressed by the passion and commitment that Lawrence brings to everything he is involved with."
The allure of Aston Martin
Newey's decision to join Aston Martin was influenced by the team's comprehensive approach to success.
He highlighted the importance of the new AMR Technology Campus and its state-of-the-art wind tunnel, as well as partnerships with industry giants like Honda and Aramco.
"Together with great partners like Honda and Aramco, they have all the key pieces of infrastructure needed to make Aston Martin a world championship-winning team,"
Newey explained.
A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
For Lawrence Stroll, securing Newey's services represents a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" and a clear demonstration of Aston Martin's championship ambitions.
Stroll's hands-on approach and the team's cutting-edge facilities were key factors in convincing Newey to embark on this new chapter in his illustrious career.
"As soon as Adrian became available, we knew we had to make it happen,"
Stroll enthused.
"When he saw what we have built at Silverstone – our incredible AMR Technology Campus, the talented group of people we have assembled and the latest wind tunnel in the sport – he quickly understood what we are trying to achieve."
With 12 drivers' and 13 constructors' championships to his name from stints at Williams, McLaren, and Red Bull, Newey's track record speaks for itself.
