Norris wins Singapore amid "baffling"errors, Rosberg says
Nico Rosberg expresses concern over Lando Norris' "three major mistakes" during his Singapore Grand Prix victory. Despite leading comfortably, Norris brushed walls twice and made a significant braking error, raising questions about his consistency in challenging race conditions.
Lando Norris secured a dominant victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, but his performance has come under scrutiny from 2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg.
Despite leading from lights to flag, Norris' drive was marred by what Rosberg described as "three major mistakes" that could have potentially ended his race prematurely.
Norris' near-misses at Marina Bay
The McLaren driver's win, while impressive, was not without its heart-stopping moments.
Norris brushed the wall on two separate occasions during the race, reminiscent of the incident that ended George Russell's race dramatically last season.
Additionally, he out-braked himself while lapping the Williams of Franco Colapinto, further highlighting the precarious nature of his victory.
Rosberg, analyzing the race on the Sky F1 podcast, expressed his bewilderment at Norris' errors.
"For me, it kind of baffled me a little bit what was going on there,"
Rosberg stated.
"Because he hit the wall twice and both were like really severe, almost race-ending moments where he was quite lucky not to DNF."
The former Mercedes driver's concerns
Rosberg's critique extended beyond the wall contacts.
He pointed out a particularly worrying moment when Norris made a significant error under braking.
"Once, he went miles off the track in a hairpin out-braking [himself] – but really not a small out-braking, like a massive out-braking,"
Rosberg explained.
The combination of these incidents left Rosberg questioning Norris' ability to maintain focus throughout the race, especially given the comfortable lead he had established.
"I can't remember myself, or a Max Verstappen or whatever, or Lewis [Hamilton], when leading so comfortably with like 30 seconds [advantage] making three major mistakes like that. That was a bit strange,"
he added.
Singapore's unique challenges
While acknowledging the grueling nature of the Singapore Grand Prix, known for its physical and mental demands on drivers, Rosberg struggled to attribute Norris' mistakes solely to the challenging conditions.
"I know Singapore is so hard [for] concentration. Physically, it's so so tough, but I don't know what it's down to,"
he mused.
Norris' recurring issue
Rosberg highlighted that these errors are not isolated incidents in Norris' driving style.
"We know that from Lando, that he tends to make those little errors all the time, everywhere. We've seen that from him, and he needs to iron that out if he wants to fight for the championship this year,"
Rosberg asserted.
