Nike opposes Max Verstappen's clothing brand name 'Max 1'
Max Verstappen's bid to launch his clothing brand, 'Max 1', has hit a snag as Nike has opposed the trademark. The BOIP confirms Nike's opposition, citing the similarity to its Air Max shoe range.
Max Verstappen’s on-track activities have been nothing short of exceptional in recent years.
With two World Championships already under his belt and a dominating start to the F1 2023 campaign with Red Bull, the Dutchman is on course to make it three in a row this season.
However, his aspirations stretch beyond the racetrack. Verstappen has expressed a desire to launch his own clothing brand, called ‘Max 1’. But there’s a problem: Nike has taken issue with the name.
Trademark opposition from Nike
The Benelux Office for Intellectual Property (BOIP) has confirmed Nike’s opposition to Verstappen’s brand name, citing the similarity to the popular Nike Air Max shoe range.
According to the BOIP’s report, both brand names contain the word “MAX”, albeit in different places.
The report also highlights the potential confusion that the similarity of the names could cause for consumers.
Based on these factors, the BOIP believes there is a likelihood of confusion and that the public may believe that the goods covered by both brand names belong to the same undertaking or economically linked companies.
Verstappen looks to find a solution
Verstappen is reportedly searching for a new route to get his clothing brand off the ground.
Whether he will pursue a legal battle with Nike or opt for a different name is unclear.
Either way, it seems the Dutchman’s focus on life outside of Formula 1 is growing.
Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, Perez, sends a warning
As Verstappen deals with opposition to his clothing brand, he must also contend with a strong challenge from Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez.
The Mexican driver’s impressive performance in Saudi Arabia suggests he may finally pose a serious challenge to Verstappen’s World Championship aspirations.
While Perez claimed victory, Verstappen managed to snatch the fastest lap bonus point, ensuring he heads into the Australian GP with a one-point lead over his teammate.
