McLaren faces a critical decision as Formula 1 gears up for its return, weighing the risks of upgrading their MCL38 against the potential of falling behind if they maintain the status quo.

The Silverware conundrum

Fresh off Lando Norris' dominant victory in Singapore, where he finished a staggering 21 seconds ahead of Max Verstappen, McLaren finds itself in an enviable yet precarious position.

The team's recent success has catapulted them to the top of the Constructors' Championship, boasting a 41-point lead over Red Bull.

However, this newfound performance presents a unique challenge for Team Principal Andrea Stella and his technical staff.

Evolution vs. revolution

Since introducing a major upgrade package at the Miami Grand Prix, McLaren has taken a measured approach to development.

The team has kept the same floor on the MCL38 for 12 consecutive races, focusing instead on optimizing other elements such as wings, brake ducts, bodywork, and suspension components.

This strategy has paid dividends, with the MCL38 emerging as the car to beat in recent races.

However, as the United States Grand Prix looms on the horizon – a event traditionally marked by significant upgrades across the grid – McLaren must decide whether to introduce a new floor or maintain their current configuration.

Stella's dilemma

Reflecting on the team's recent success, Stella admits to the complexity of the situation.

"In fairness, that was one of my thoughts after the race,"

he revealed post-Singapore,

"because we do have some stuff in the pipeline. Obviously, when you have this kind of performance on track you always approach things from a cautious point of view in terms of development."

Despite the temptation to stick with a winning formula, Stella emphasizes the importance of continuing their development trajectory.

"At the same time, we need to trust the process. We need to trust the way we've been working so far,"

he asserted.

"I've said already that we have taken our time to make sure that once we deliver trackside we have done the due diligence. So I don't think this will change our plans."

The competitive landscape

Stella is acutely aware that standing still in Formula 1's relentless development race is tantamount to moving backward.

He points out the potential for rivals to make significant gains, citing Red Bull's competitive showing in Singapore despite initial pessimism about their prospects at the circuit.

"In Formula 1 I'm not sure you can back off too much because backing off means that the others may catch and we don't know what the plans of the others are,"

Stella explained.

"In Red Bull, we see that at a track in which they thought they would have not been very competitive, ultimately they were potentially second best."
