McLaren axes David Sanchez just months after Ferrari hire
In a surprising move, McLaren has confirmed the departure of David Sanchez from his role as Technical Director of Car Concept and Performance, just three months after joining from Ferrari.
Restructuring and high-profile arrivals
Early in 2023, under the guidance of new Team Principal Andrea Stella, McLaren restructured their technical team with an eye towards the 2024 season.
This included the exciting arrivals of former Red Bull stalwart Rob Marshall and ex-Ferrari chief engineer David Sanchez, who joined the team at the start of 2024 after their gardening leave periods concluded.
Sanchez's abrupt exit
However, in an unexpected announcement, McLaren confirmed Sanchez's exit from his high-profile role as Technical Director of Car Concept and Performance.
Misalignment of expectations
Providing insight into the situation, Sanchez stated,
"While the role we envisioned and had agreed to was not aligned with the reality of the position I found."
" I leave with respect for the leadership, admiration for the dedication of my colleagues, and appreciation for the openness and honesty in which we discussed and arrived at this decision."
Stella acknowledges differing perspectives
Team Principal Andrea Stella shed further light, saying,
"Upon our joint reflection, it became apparent that the role, responsibilities, and ambitions associated with David's position did not align with our original expectations when he agreed to join us in February 2023."
Amicable parting
Stella added,
"Recognising this misalignment, both David and I agreed that it would be best to part ways now, so to enable him to pursue other opportunities that will better leverage the full scale and breadth of his remarkable skillset."
Restructured technical team
Sanchez's departure has prompted changes within McLaren's technical team.
Rob Marshall will take over as Chief Designer, while Neil Houldey becomes Technical Director – Engineering.
Peter Prodromou continues as Technical Director – Aerodynamics, with Stella assuming the reworked Technical Director – Performance role on an interim basis until a permanent appointment is made.
Sanchez's next move
In his departing statement, Sanchez expressed gratitude for the opportunity at McLaren, stating,
"I wish this team continued success as it continues its journey to the front of the grid where it belongs. I look forward to my next challenge within F1."
