In a rain-shortened second practice session at Suzuka, a late burst of dry-tire running saw McLaren's Oscar Piastri emerge as the quickest driver.

With only a few minutes remaining, Piastri managed to set a lap time of 1:34.725 on the soft compound tire, edging out Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton by 0.501 seconds.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claimed the third spot, also on soft tires, but found himself four seconds off the pace as he chose not to push during his only representative lap.

The Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez settled for fourth and fifth, respectively, having set their times on intermediate tires.

Local star Yuki Tsunoda impressed his home crowd by outpacing Daniel Ricciardo.
