Hamilton: Combined MotoGP and F1 races could create epic moments
Lewis Hamilton envisions joint race weekends between Formula 1 and MotoGP as "epic" following Liberty Media's acquisition of an 86% ownership stake in Dorna Sports and MotoGP.
In a recent interview at the Japanese Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of Formula 1 and MotoGP hosting shared race weekends.
His comments come after Liberty Media, the owners of F1's commercial rights since 2017, announced their acquisition of an 86% stake in Dorna Sports and MotoGP in a €4.2 billion deal.
Driver's perspective
The seven-time F1 champion, known for his passion for MotoGP, stated,
"It would be epic if we can have them on the same weekend."
Hamilton, a self-proclaimed fan of the premier motorcycle racing series, jokingly added,
"Maybe I could do a race in MotoGP and race a Formula 1 car on the same weekend – that would be really cool,"
before acknowledging such a scenario as "impossible."
Technical feasibility
While the idea of combined F1 and MotoGP events is deemed unlikely in the short term, it could potentially work at larger venues where both championships already race, such as the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.
However, the concept may face challenges at many of F1's new street circuits.
Organizational synergies
MotoGP Dorna sporting director Carlos Ezpeleta has not ruled out the possibility of future shared race weekends with F1, following Liberty Media's acquisition of a controlling stake in the motorcycle racing series.
Hamilton's focus
Despite his enthusiasm for MotoGP, Hamilton reiterated that his primary focus remains on Formula 1 and helping Mercedes return to winning ways.
He acknowledged the challenges his team is facing but emphasized his determination to fight for victories before his anticipated move to Ferrari in 2025.
The potential synergies between F1 and MotoGP under Liberty Media's ownership could pave the way for innovative collaborations and shared events in the future.
While logistical hurdles exist, the prospect of witnessing the pinnacles of four-wheeled and two-wheeled motorsport converge on the same weekend holds immense appeal for fans worldwide.
