Lewis Hamilton has come out in support of Michael Andretti's potential Formula 1 entry, saying it would be "great" for the series.

The FIA announced this week that Andretti Global's application passed the first two phases, receiving governing body approval.

The matter now goes to F1 itself for commercial discussion around the financial impact on existing teams.

Some drivers have been cautious about publicly backing Andretti's Cadillac-partnered project given current team objections.

However, seven-time world champion Hamilton stated "I think it's great" when asked about the prospect.

While acknowledging his views may not be popular within F1 circles, Hamilton emphasized the opportunities another team could create.

"There will be more jobs, there's two more seats for potential female drivers, it opens up possibilities, I think it'll be more exciting," he explained.

The Mercedes driver believes having additional cars on the grid is better for the sport overall.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen also welcomed the idea from a driver's perspective.

He noted teams have valid financial concerns but called Andretti "a professional team" with strong partners.

Verstappen feels the FIA, F1 and teams must weigh up the proposal's seriousness but said reaching a decision won't be easy.

Veteran Fernando Alonso suggested he'll align with his Aston Martin team's stance given his lack of insider knowledge.

However, the Spaniard praised Andretti as a "great team" and "great name."

Meanwhile, fellow driver Valtteri Bottas strongly advocated for more cars.

The Alfa Romeo racer claimed "the more teams the better" for on-track entertainment and young driver openings.

Andretti aims to join the grid in 2025 but faces significant opposition from current organizations worried about reduced profits.

While Hamilton and some drivers are enthusiastic about expansion, teams remain wary of potential negative financial impacts.

The FIA has greenlit Andretti's entry bid, but complicated commercial negotiations with F1 lie ahead.
