Guenther Steiner on F1's divide, Red Bull scandal, and his future in the sport
Former Haas F1 Team Principal Guenther Steiner, now a television commentator, shares his insights on the growing performance gap in Formula 1, the ongoing Red Bull texting scandal, and his potential return to the paddock.
The great divide in formula 1
Despite the introduction of a cost cap in 2021, aimed at leveling the playing field, Guenther Steiner observes a significant divide in Formula 1.
"You have got five teams … on the top and then five teams on the bottom. It's almost like two championships,"
he remarks, highlighting the continued dominance of powerhouses like Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari.
The Red Bull texting scandal
Steiner weighs in on the ongoing controversy surrounding Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner, who was accused of sending inappropriate texts to a female team employee before being cleared by an internal investigation.
"In the higher ranks of the company, there will be… some people rethinking what they want to do,"
Steiner says, emphasizing the potential fallout within the Red Bull hierarchy.
Hopes for resolution and progress
Acknowledging the damage the scandal could inflict on Formula 1, Steiner expresses his hope for a swift resolution.
"I hope that for the sake of Formula 1 … they put an end to it … and we move on,"
he states, underscoring the importance of moving past the controversy and focusing on the sport itself.
Ferrari's potential challenge
While Red Bull and Max Verstappen have dominated the opening races of the season, Steiner believes Ferrari could pose a significant challenge in the second half of the year.
"If they've had good progress in development … they could challenge Red Bull hopefully [in the] second half of the season,"
he speculates, hinting at the potential for an exciting title battle.
A potential return to the paddock
Despite his recent departure from Haas, Steiner remains open to the possibility of returning to the Formula 1 paddock in the future.
"Maybe setting up a new team, for the new era of Formula 1 … that could be an opportunity,"
he muses, leaving the door open for another venture as a team principal if the right circumstances present themselves.
Steiner's insights and perspective
As a former team principal and now a television commentator, Guenther Steiner offers a unique and invaluable perspective on the inner workings of Formula 1.
His analysis of the sport's current state, the Red Bull scandal, and his potential future involvement provide valuable insights for fans and industry insiders alike.
