The FIA has approved Andretti Formula Racing's application to join the Formula 1 grid from 2025, granting them permission to proceed to the final stage of selection.

However, Andretti must still reach a commercial agreement with Formula One Management to secure the coveted 11th team slot.

FIA completes thorough analysis of all applicants

Announcing their decision on Monday, the FIA stated Andretti was the sole applicant shortlisted after months of rigorous analysis of the four prospective new teams.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem asserted they established stringent criteria for entry and conducted comprehensive due diligence during the two-stage application process.

This included assessing each team's sporting, technical and financial capabilities, as well as their sustainability and societal impact plans.

Andretti was the only outfit that fulfilled F1's stringent requirements in all material respects.

Andretti awaits commercial talks

Michael Andretti welcomed the FIA's approval, calling it an important moment of pride for Andretti Cadillac.

He stated their deep racing experience and technological innovations from motorsports would benefit consumers and invigorate interest in F1 globally.

Andretti now awaits commercial negotiations with F1 rights holders Liberty Media regarding joining the grid possibly by 2025.

Resistance to grid expansion clouds Andretti's entry

However, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has repeatedly emphasized any new team must provide clear added value to the sport.

With resistance among existing teams to expanding the grid beyond 10, Andretti faces challenging commercial talks despite gaining the FIA's formal approval.

Domenicali stated they will conduct their own assessment on the merits of Andretti's remaining application during negotiations in the coming months.
