Ferrari testing in Fiorano for Imola F1 upgrades
Ferrari debuts Imola upgrades at Fiorano, testing new parts and FIA's prototype splashguard. The team aims to boost performance and keep pace with rivals in the development race
Ferrari is currently evaluating the new components during filming days at Fiorano, which include testing the FIA's new prototype mud guard.
As the Formula 1 circus heads to Italy for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Ferrari is unveiling its first comprehensive upgrade package of the 2024 season.
The Scuderia is utilizing its private Fiorano circuit for filming days on Thursday and Friday, allowing the team to shake down the new components and gather valuable data ahead of their race debut.
Notably, the team is also testing the FIA's new prototype mud guard, a concept that was previously tested by Mercedes and McLaren at Silverstone with mixed results.
Upgrade Details and Splash Guard Testing
Ferrari's SF-24 is receiving the first of three planned upgrade packages at Imola. This initial step incorporates aerodynamic enhancements developed by the Enrico Cardile-led technical team.
Alongside these upgrades, Ferrari is testing the FIA's new prototype mud guard.
Two Ferraris are on track: the F1-75 fitted with the new device and the SF-24 without the mud guard.
The Fiorano track has been artificially watered, making it suitable for these types of tests.
Although the Silverstone test by Mercedes and McLaren did not yield the expected feedback and data, the technical office of Tombazis did not discard the idea and continued to develop it.
Driver Involvement and Preparation
In addition to the work done for the FIA, this is also an opportunity for the drivers to train.
Ollie Bearman, the jewel of the Ferrari Driver Academy (FDA) currently competing in F2, is preparing to face the Imola weekend with the possibility of participating in the first free practice session with Haas.
After Jeddah and the Ferrari tests, he immediately has the opportunity to return to the wheel of a Formula 1 car with the goal of earning a seat for next year.
Arthur Leclerc is involved in extra-F1 projects and contributes to Ferrari's work in the simulator.
Carlos Sainz, while waiting for tomorrow, will also have the chance to do some final laps on the "base" SF-24, which is also useful for comparing data in view of tomorrow.
Imola's Significance
The timing of the upgrade's debut at Imola, Ferrari's first home race, is a coincidence facilitated by the team's proximity to the circuit.
Nonetheless, the Italian Grand Prix holds immense significance for the Scuderia, and a strong performance with the upgraded package could provide a much-needed boost amidst the intense development battle unfolding this season.
