Ferrari stays consistent with the SF-24 name for the 2024 F1 car
Ferrari breaks amusing tradition by logically naming its 2024 F1 entry the SF-24, instead of returning to the notoriously inconsistent numbering of past cars.
Ferrari has continued its recent tradition of logical chassis naming by christening its 2024 Formula 1 car the SF-24. The news ends speculation that the Maranello squad could return to it's 65oriously inconsistent naming conventions of the past.
The SF-24 designation follows on from 2023’s SF-23, making this the first time since 2018 that Ferrari has used a simple digit increase to signify its newest chassis.
Ferrari first adopted the “SF” nomenclature, standing for Scuderia Ferrari, at the beginning of the V6 hybrid era with 2015’s SF15-T.
After an anomaly in 2022 when the iconic squad named its car the F1-75 to celebrate the brand’s 75th anniversary, Ferrari returned to the SF prefix last season.
While the “SF” has remained a constant, Ferrari has puzzlingly oscillated between hyphenated and non-hyphenated names over the years.
The SF15-T, SF16-H and SF21 all featured hyphens, while the SF70H, SF71H, SF90 and SF1000 went without. Thankfully, in the interest of consistency, the 2023 and 2024 cars continue without the hyphen.
According to Ferrari, the new SF-24 recently concluded its development phase under the Project 676 codename. It is set to be officially revealed on February 13th before pre-season testing commences later that month.
Fans will be hoping the latest challenger can build on 2023’s promising form and mount a sustained title challenge.
With a logical naming scheme now in place for two consecutive seasons, Scuderia Ferrari seems to have found stability in its chassis christening.
Only time will tell whether the team will stay the course or return to its convention-defying ways of old. For now, the SF-24 designation brings much-needed clarity ahead of the 2024 season.
