Ferrari is planning upgrades to bridge the gap to Red Bull
Ferrari is gearing up for a series of significant upgrades aimed at bridging the performance deficit to dominant rivals Red Bull, with upgrades planned for the upcoming races.
Constructors' battle
After the opening two rounds in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, Ferrari has emerged as the second-quickest team behind Red Bull, trailing by approximately four-tenths of a second per lap.
While the SF-23 was limited by its architecture, the current SF-24 is built on a different concept, boasting a rethought chassis, cooling system packaging, and power unit accessories.
Tyre warm-up
One of the primary weaknesses identified in the SF-24, particularly in Saudi Arabia, is its struggle with slow tyre warm-up.
The car requires two full laps to reach the ideal operating temperature, indicating a lack of downforce to generate sufficient tyre energy.
Ferrari has already adopted a flatter rear-wing main profile to address this issue.
Upgrade pipeline
To solve the downforce deficiency and close the gap to Red Bull, Ferrari has a comprehensive upgrade program lined up, beginning with a new floor set to debut at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka.
Suzuka upgrades:
- New floor with revised Venturi channels and edges
- Selection of new wing specifications
Imola upgrades:
- Reduced cross-section air inlets
- Upward inclination of the lower lip, increasing airflow under the sculpted sidepods
- Tapered rear section, inspired by Red Bull's design
These upgrades aim to increase downforce while maintaining the SF-24's excellent aerodynamic balance.
Methodical approach
Ferrari's strategy involves integrating upgrades in stages, first to the floor and then to the sidepods.
This approach allows the team to verify the effects of each component and find the ideal set-up, ensuring optimal performance in line with simulations.
The sidepod upgrades at Imola will see a reprofiling of the rear area, characterized by greater tapering, following the trend set by Red Bull's RB20.
By implementing these upgrades methodically, Ferrari hopes to unlock the potential of the SF-24 and mount a stronger challenge against the dominant Red Bull team.
