Ferrari forging own path for 2024 F1 success

Ferrari adopt radical design changes for 2024 including S-ducts to boost floor downforce, as they refuse copying Red Bull's extreme sidepod undercuts and forge their own path to beat Red Bull's dominance.

Ferrari is embracing a radically different design approach for their 2024 F1 challenger as they aim to halt Red Bull's dominance and return to the top step according to Motorsport Italy.

Refusing to copy Red Bull's philosophy

Despite being the only non-Red Bull winner in 2023, Ferrari ended the season a distant third in the standings.

However, team principal Fred Vasseur insists Ferrari will not simply mimic Red Bull's extreme undercut sidepod concept that has powered them to victory.

"The 676, cleansed of the SF-23's errors, should represent a good step forward," Vasseur stated, confirming Ferrari's commitment to an alternate route to success compatible with their long-held ideals.

Refining front push, rear pull aero

While retaining their overall 2023 design of front push and rear pull aero, significant refinements are slated for the 676.

This includes a central keel below the car to better direct air into the Venturi tunnels for increased downforce.

The tighter packaging sees a 20mm narrower gearbox and transmission case that permits a larger diffuser at the rear.

Working in conjunction, these aim to raise downforce levels without excessive drag from the wings.

Sticking with S-Ducts

However, the most radical change looks to be the reintroduction of S-ducts, last seen on F1 cars in 2016.

Side-mounted air passages will channel high-energy airflow from above directly into the floor and diffuser.

This aims to increase underbody pressure and downforce substantially. It presents an intriguing alternative to Red Bull's philosophy of undercutting sidepods to achieve the same.

Only pre-season testing will reveal if Ferrari's innovative solution bears fruit. But the Scuderia is invested in proving their distinctive vision can rise to the top.
