Ferrari has fired up its first power unit conforming to Formula 1's new engine regulations slated for introduction in 2026, over two years ahead of the rule changes taking effect.

This early running of the 2026-spec hybrid V6 marks the first tangible milestone in Ferrari’s preparations for the sport’s new era of power units.

As per a report by Motorsport Italy, Ferrari’s power unit project team led by Wolf Zimmermann and Enrico Gualtieri conducted initial tests on the new unit just prior to the Christmas break in Maranello.

While never intended to power an actual Formula 1 car, the successful firing up of the prototype is an encouraging sign of progress in the development timeline mapped out by Ferrari.

Sustainable fuels and hybrid boost keyfocuses

With Formula 1 switching to 100% sustainable fuels from 2026, Ferrari is paying special attention to optimizing combustion characteristics to suit the new ethanol fuel blend.

Additionally, the doubling of electrical power from the Energy Recovery Systems to 50% of total power output requires substantial work on energy deployment and energy conversion efficiency.

Ferrari is also reaping benefits from its technical partnership with Austrian specialist AVL.

With extensive prior expertise in high-performance hybrid powertrains, AVL's engineering support has proven invaluable for Ferrari's own learning process.

Multi-year development plan

The initial 2026-spec unit unveiled now will pave the way for rapid iteration over subsequent versions.

With two years still remaining for the rules to take effect, Ferrari has ample room to explore innovative technological solutions before converging on a final specification.

Upbeat 2024 car prospects

In a further positive development, Ferrari staff members have also indicated a "climate of confidence" regarding the Scuderia’s 2024 car currently under development.

Codenamed ‘Project 676’, Ferrari’s 2024 challenger is set to break cover on February 13th next year.

The reporting suggests Ferrari has managed to unlock strong development potential for its next title bid.

Ferrari's promising progress on both its medium-term and long-term engineering projects indicates the team’s unwavering commitment to return to the front in Formula 1’s new era.
