Fernando Alonso's impressive performance in the second practice session of the 2023 Bahrain Grand Prix, ahead of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, suggests he could be a contender this weekend.
The Aston Martin driver completed a four-lap run on the soft tyres midway through the session to go fastest from Verstappen by 0.169s.
But it wasn't just Alonso who impressed, as Nico Hulkenberg made a surprise appearance in the top five for Haas, matching the best lap from Charles Leclerc ahead of Lance Stroll and Pierre Gasly.
Meanwhile, Mercedes struggled during the qualifying runs, with Lewis Hamilton only managing to secure the eighth fastest time, and George Russell falling outside the top 10 in 13th.
