In a significant move for both team and driver, Alpine has announced a multi-year contract extension for Pierre Gasly, solidifying one half of its driver lineup for the 2025 Formula 1 season and beyond.
This development comes amidst a period of transition for the French outfit, which is seeking to improve its competitive position on the grid.
Team continuity and performance
Alpine's decision to retain Gasly provides a measure of stability as the team navigates through a challenging period.
The 2024 season began with difficulties, as the team's car was reportedly overweight by approximately 10kg
However, recent performances have shown signs of improvement, with both Gasly and teammate Esteban Ocon securing points in the last two races.
Gasly's performance and commitment
Currently leading Ocon in the drivers' standings with 5 points to 3, Gasly has demonstrated his value to the team.
His commitment to Alpine's long-term vision is evident in his statement:
"I feel very much at home at this great team. I enjoy being a real part of both the Formula 1 project and the wider Alpine Cars vision."
The French driver further emphasized his dedication to the project, stating,
"While on-track it's been a challenging season so far, I remain faithful to the project and I'm not going anywhere."
Team principal's perspective
Bruno Famin, Alpine's team principal, expressed satisfaction with Gasly's contract extension, highlighting the driver's experience and potential. Famin stated,
"He is a driver with huge experience in Formula 1 and continues to show huge amounts of potential on-track. "
"For Alpine as a brand, he is a great ambassador and we therefore look forward to continuing our collaboration."
Future lineup considerations
With Esteban Ocon's departure announced for the end of the 2024 season, Alpine now faces the task of selecting Gasly's future teammate.
The team is reportedly considering several options, including a potential return for Carlos Sainz to the Enstone-based squad.
Additionally, reserve driver Jack Doohan and Alpine's World Endurance Championship driver Mick Schumacher are believed to be in contention, with both having tested the team's 2022 machinery at Paul Ricard.
Technical development focus
While securing Gasly's future is a positive step, Alpine remains focused on improving its current package. Famin emphasized,
"We have high ambitions this current season and we will work tirelessly to achieve those things."
As Alpine continues its efforts to climb the Formula 1 pecking order, the retention of Gasly provides a stable foundation upon which the team can build its future success.
